It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the Landscape of User Experience in Switzerland (LUXS) 2011 event, which will take place on September 8th, 2011 from 3PM to 8PM at the University of Zurich, followed by an optional informal dinner. This untraditional event, organized jointly by the University of Zurich and the SI Software Ergonomics aims to bridge the academic and industry UX communities in Switzerland. LUXS is an opportunity to meet people conducting research in Human-Computer Interaction, Usability, Interaction Design and related areas, promote your activities in these areas, and gain exposure to the current landscape and future direction of UX research taking place throughout Switzerland in a dynamic and exciting forum.

Attached please find the AAL Info-Event Zürich 2011 in Zurich on 1 April 2011, hosted by the ICT Accessibility Group of the Swiss Informatics Society and the Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology (OPET). The event addresses all Swiss stakeholders interested in participating in the upcoming AAL call 4; it will give an overview of the AAL Joint Programme, provide essential information on call 4 (subjects, application procedure, funding rules etc.) and present a showcase of a running AAL project in Switzerland.

Abstract:
Der neuartige Desktop für Macintosh, inspiriert von und benannt nach der User-Interface-Legende Jef Raskin zeigt alle relevanten Dokumente und Programme auf einer einzigen, durchgehend zoombaren Oberfläche. Die Applikation implementiert mehrere zukunftsweisende Konzepte welche im Vortrag vorgestellt und anhand “Raskin” demonstriert werden: die Darstellung komplexer Informationshierarchien auf einer einzigen Fläche, der Umgang mit Grössenverhältnissen, das Timing der Animationen und die Touch- und Mausinteraktion mit einer spatialen Benutzerschnittstelle, Trends im Umgang mit Dokumenten und Ordnern und der gewählte UX-Entwicklungsprozess.

Zur Person:
Martin Halter, Geschäftsführer und Software-Architekt von Raskin, arbeitet seit Juni 2009 zusammen mit vier weiteren Personen an Raskin. Nach dem Studium in Rapperswil (HSR) als Informatik-Ingenieur arbeitete er mehrere Jahre bei Abraxas Informatik AG als Projektleiter und bei Optaros, einer internationalen Beratungs- und Softwarefirma. Martin hat den ersten Prototyp von Raskin im Jahre 2002 im Rahmen einer Studienarbeit an der HSR entwickelt und sich dann im Juni 2009 vollständig der Umsetzung der Vision von Jef Raskin angenommen.

Next UX Book Club (Zurich)

Hi everyone!

I’m back from my wonderful three months of travelling and and happy to see that quite some new members joined the group, welcome! I hope to see you soon.

Now the question is on how to proceed. We have talked several times about discussing “Designing for the Digital Age” in tranches (it’s about six hundert pages, if I remember correctly). My suggestion would be to finally tackle this, starting in March, and meet again in April and May.

Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence and robotics become more and more part of our daily life in the form of anthropomorphic robots for care, artificial limbs or a multitude of mobile and networked devices. The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Zurich is a place where researchers build robots to understand how thought and intelligence is related to the body and how various types of robots interact with and in their environment. In this lab visit we will get insight into the field with presentations of current research projects, and we will have the opportunity to discuss our questions.

About the Speaker:
Rolf Pfeifer is Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in the Department of Informatics at the University of Zurich. He is the co-author of “How the Body Shapes the Way We Think” (http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=11003), in which the concept of embodied intelligence is presented and design principles are applied to various fields such as robotics, ubiquitous computing or organizational development.
